Steroid Hormones

Main Entry: Steroid Hormones

Definition: Steroids that act as hormones. A very significant part of the functioning of the human body.

Steroid hormones are all derived from cholesterol, besides retinoic acid. The cholesterol they come from are synthesized in the gonads and the adrenal glands. Steroid hormones are generally carried in the blood to certain carrier proteins like sex hormone binding globulin or corticosteroid binding globulin.

They serve a wide variety of physiological functions such as anti-inflammatory agents to regulating the events of pregnancy.

These are the principal natural human steroid hormones:

  • Glucocorticoids
    • cortisol
  • Mineralocorticoids
    • aldosterone
  • Sex steroids
    • Androgens
      • testosterone
      • dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA)
      • dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS)
      • androstenedione
      • dihydrotestosterone (DHT)
    • Estrogens
      • estradiol
      • estrone
      • estriol
    • Progestagens
      • progesterone
      • Progestins

Some synthetic steroids have been made to replace the natural steroid hormones. Some of them are much weaker, and some of them much stronger than the natural steroids receptors that they activate.
