Pronunciation: pr - jes-t - r n
Function: noun
: a female steroid sex hormone C21H30O2 that is secreted by the corpus luteum to prepare the endometrium for implantation and later by the placenta during pregnancy to prevent rejection of the developing embryo or fetus; also : a synthetic steroid resembling progesterone in action
Progesterone is one of the steroid hormones. It is secreted by the corpus luteum and by the placenta and is responsible for preparing the body for pregnancy and, if pregnancy occurs, maintaining it until birth.
Progesterone levels vary during the menstrual cycle and sometimes can be related to fertility problems. During menopause the levels also change, and the levels are usually measured to help determine the best HRT for each individual patient.
