First Drug Available for HRTPremarin was one of the first drugs available for the treatment of menopause, and hormone replacement therapy. Premarin is made from pregnant mares' urine, and is often referred to as PMU. When the first epidemic for the use of Premarin was predominant, it was mainly used in Canada. They were the first major parties in HRT.Premarin is produced in Manitoba, Alberta, and Saskatchewan, Canada from many of their mare farms. The farms have been moved to these providences because of their lack of laws pertaining to this industry. They have complete control over the Premarin industry, due to the rising demand of the drug from the baby boomers. Currently they are trying to reduce the number of farms due to the treatment of the horses. The horses are not able to move at all, and are tied into very tight quarters. Many women, who have heard about where the PMU in their Premarin comes from, have chosen to use natural hormone replacements, or non PMU hormones. These methods also come with fewer side effects than PMU products.
