Suppositories for HRT

One of the first forms available for hormonal replacement was suppositories. They are still used today and are designed to be inserted vaginally.

Using them has certain advantages and benefits.

• Vaginal tissue provides a large area of absorption
• It allows the hormone to be directly absorbed into the bloodstream, avoiding the first pass elimination where hormones are either broken down or bound to carrier proteins and destroyed when passed through the liver.

A polyethylene glycol based suppository works well because it is nonirritating and provides a consistent release of hormones into the bloodstream.
