Phytoestrogens Reducing Menopausal SymptomsPhytoestrogens are weak hormones found in many plants. Currently they are being used to relieve some of the symptoms of menopause. It is known that increased exposure to hormones gives us an added risk to be diagnosed with cancer, especially breast cancer. So are phytoestrogens safe? Virtually everything we eat -- grains, beans, nuts, seeds, seed oils, berries, fruits, vegetables, and roots -- contains phytoestrogens. It hasn't yet been officially determined if an increased amount of phytoestrogens actually cause a greater risk of cancer. In some studies, it has been proven that it can actually reduce the risk of some cancers. The current scientific consensus is that the outcome of increased phytoestrogen intake is unpredictable partly due to a poor understanding of their mechanisms of action. There is the possibility of both adverse and beneficial effects in some individuals in different target organs, depending on their age or their maturity.
