Who is Marla Ahlgrimm?

Marla Ahlgrimm is the founder and chairman of Women's Health America. At an early age, she knew she wanted to be an entrepreneur, as her father started his own business when she was eight years old. In high school, her father gave her the opportunity to take a new product, and see what she could make of it. Marla definitely made an impact and shocked her customers by making personal visits, and by being a young teenage girl. She made such an impact, that she was able to begin a new division of the company called Ahlgrimm Sales.

Now, a registered pharmacist with a degree from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, Marla is the leader of Women's Health America, as well as cofounder of Madison Pharmacy Associates, Inc located in Madison, Wisconsin. Madison Pharmacy Associated was the first pharmacy in the United States that specialized solely in women's health care.

Marla Ahlgrimm was also one of the first medical professionals in the US to recognize, define, and develop treatments for premenstrual symptoms, now abbreviated to PMS, and has been working in individualized hormone replacement therapy since the late 1970s.

Over the years, Ahlgrimm's work has broadened to include other women's health issues and treatments, some of them as controversial as those for PMS at the time. WHA offers a “customized” and “natural” (as opposed to “synthetic”) hormone replacement therapy for the symptoms of menopause, which some in the medical community have viewed with skepticism. Recent national studies indicating that synthetic HRT poses a risk of heart attacks, strokes, and some cancers have only added to the debate surrounding HRT. Ahlgrimm remains unfazed by critics and skeptics. She defends her tests and formulations, and says she remains focused on being a leading resource in America in understanding hormonal transitions in women. She cites the number of medical practitioners and scores of women who tell her she has changed their lives. As for the rest, “they're catching on,” Ahlgrimm says.
