Follicle Stimulating Hormones (FSH) and Luteinizing Hormones (LH)Luteinizing hormones and follicle stimulating hormones are gonadotropins because they stimulate the gonads. In females they stimulate the ovaries to produce eggs, and in males, the testes, to produce sperm. FSH and LH are produced by the anterior pituitary gland, and are essential for reproduction. The principle regulator of LH and FSH secretion is gonadotropin-releasing hormone or GnRH (also known as LH-releasing hormone). GnRH is a ten amino acid peptide that is synthesized and secreted from hypothalamic neurons and binds to receptors on gonadotrophs. See also gonadotropins
