Eicosapentaenoic Acid

Main Entry: ei·co·sa·pen·ta·e·no·ic acid
Pronunciation: -k -s - pen-t - - n -ik-, -i- n -ik-
Function: noun

: An omega-3 fatty acid C20H30O2 found especially in fish oils -- abbreviation EPA

Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), are prevalent in fish and fish oils. It's a polyunsaturated fatty acid that acts as a precursor for prostaglandin-3 , which inhibits platelet aggregation and thromboxane-3 groups. It is found in fish oils of cod liver, herring , mackerel , salmon , and sardine . It is also found in human breast milk .

Classic symptoms of inflammation are largely due to eicosanoids. Prostaglandins cause the pain, and leukotrienes cause the swelling and redness associated with inflammation. In order to get rid of these symptoms you need to increase the “good” anti-inflammatory eicosanoids. These come from long-chain omega-3 fatty acids, such as eicosapentaenoic acid, or EPA. The balance of AA to EPA in your blood determines the levels of silent inflammation in your body.
