Antiestrogens: A substance that can prevent the full expression of estrogen.Antiestrogens act by exerting antagonistic effects on target tissues (androgens and progestogens act in this way) or by competing with estrogens for access to receptor sites located on the cell surface. For example, the drug tamoxifen (brand name: Nolvadex) is an antiestrogen that is used in the treatment of breast cancer and to reduce the breast cancer incidence in high-risk women. There are chemical compounds that are found in vegetables such as Brussels sprouts, cabbage, and cauliflower, along with a number of Asian herbs, which show promise for stopping the spread of breast cancer. This is due to evidence that antiestrogens prevent the growth of breast cancer tumors. Research is being done on this to find out more about exactly why antiestrogens can be used as an effective treatment in breast cancer.
