Prostate Cancer
The clinical term for a tumor on the prostate gland is Adenocarcinoma. When prostate cancer grows, it can be spread to the inner tissues of the gland, to the tissues of the seminal vesicles, and to other tissues near the prostate. Sometimes it can also spread to other parts of the body like the lungs, liver, and bones. When detected early, treatment to confine the cancer is usually successful.
Prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer among men. 240,000 cases will be reported each year with about 30,000 of them being fatal. This breaks down into about 1 out of 6 men. The number of diagnosed cases has risen in the past years, but the mortality rate has decreased. This is probably because of the increased screening for the disease.
Risk increases with age, and men over 70 reported the most amount of cases. African-American men have been found to be the highest risk race. Other risk factors include:
- 55 years old and older
- Diet high in saturated fat
- Exposure to heavy metals (e.g., cadmium)
- Race (African American)
- Sedentary lifestyle
- Smoking
Symptoms that should be noted included:
- Blood in the urine or semen
- Frequent urination, especially at night
- Inability to urinate
- Nagging pain or stiffness in the back, hips, upper thighs, or pelvis
- Painful ejaculation
- Pain or burning during urination (dysuria)
- Weak or interrupted urinary flow
