Main Entry: an·dro·stene·di·one
Pronunciation: an-dr - st n- d - n, - st n-d - n
Function: noun
: a steroid sex hormone C19H26O2 that is secreted by the testes, ovaries, and adrenal cortex and is a precursor of testosterone and estrogen
Androstenedione is a hormone that is found naturally in humans and is the precursor to testosterone. It is also found in animals and in some pollen of plants. It is produced in the gonads and adrenal glands of all mammals.
Androstenedione is sometimes taken orally to raise the levels of testosterone in the blood. It is a steroid that when in the body, is converted to testosterone. In boys and girls it can also be converted to the female sex steroid, estrogen.
In pre-menopausal women each the adrenal glands and ovaries produce about half of the androstenedione. Women who are post-menopausal only produce about half what they used to because of the decrease of steroid production in the ovaries.
